Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April, 1972. She was also raised by her grandmother and grew up being an all-single child. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In between two job opportunities and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. Her dream was to be an English High School teacher. This dream was however cut short when after three years of studies and as an assistant to teachers she dropped out of university. Being a poet She began to sing in live poetry recitals. She later teamed together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. The two ended up working together as well as co-writing You Got Me. Then, during Roots' performance, she revealed herself as an artist. After that, she got collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was able to perform in the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
